FROM THE RECTOR

We live in a society where agriculture shapes our landscape and provides us with necessities needed by all;  good reason to have farms and farming central to our thinking as the churches celebrate Harvest Festival.

This year, for the first time, the Group Service at Ingworth Church on 4th September will have a Harvest theme – an appropriate venue, as on the following Sunday Ingworth will be hosting the Trosh, a different way of celebrating all things agricultural.

Later in the month, several of our churches will also be keeping their own Harvest Festivals.*

As the days begin to shorten and as autumn colours dominate our landscape, let us give thanks to God for the good things of creation, and for a deeper appreciation of what is ours to share.

                                                                                                                        Fr Brian

ALDBOROUGH PARISH COUNCIL

Next meeting on  Monday, 5th September at 7.30 in the Community Centre.

Items from the minutes of the August meeting (Editor’s choice):

When the meeting was suspended to allow members of the public to speak, Mr Alec Pugh outlined the action that he had taken through Mr Norman Lamb MP in view of his dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Local Development Framework Inquiry.  He handed in copies of the exchange of correspondence between Mr Lamb and NNDC.

Police report: Since the last meeting, no crimes have been reported but there have been five calls to the police.

Play Areas: Mr Tom Palmer will be delighted to carry out the formal opening of the Play Areas. The TidyBear was only half full when ME and RE went on holiday, but on their return it was full and overflowing.  There will be a rota for emptying it so that the situation does not recur.

The Black Boys: The new owners will be taking over on 18th August.

The Red Lion: The owners are still placing advertisements on the Green by the Village Sign. RE will visit them and explain that such advertising is not permitted.

Planning: Listed Building Consent has been granted for the removal of 2 dormer windows and the installation of roof lights at Thurgarton Lodge.

Recycling Banks – The textile bank has been emptied recently but the bottle banks are full.  The contractors have not yet responded to a telephoned request to empty them.

Allotments  – Quarter plots are to be made available for letting.  The next Association Meeting will be on 2nd November.

Footpaths: NCC will be cutting some of the footpaths only once this year and will not be cutting any next year.  The Parish Council decided that they would consider whether to place a contract for footpath cutting at their next meeting

Garages: Victory Housing Trust has indicated that these will be brought up to standard fairly shortly once a new contractor has been appointed.

Speeding: DB drew attention to an article in that morning’s Eastern Daily Press indicating that £100,000 was being made available to install signs to warn against excessive speeds.  He has spoken to Norfolk County Council about the possibility of one or more signs being erected in Aldborough and will provide feedback at the next meeting.

County Councillor Diane Clarke has received a petition from parents at the School supporting the extension of the gritting route, as proposed by the Parish Council, and she will be presenting this to the Leader of the County Council, hopefully supported by some parents and children.  Dr Wood would be invited to launch a similar petition from the Surgery, even though they now have their own grit bin.

Correspondence: A letter from Mr Brian Monks the organiser of the Charles Clark Rally thanking the Parish Council for the use of The Green, indicating that the Rally raised over £650.00 for Quidenham Childrens’ Hospice and enclosing a donation of £25.00.  The Parish Council decided to donate that sum to the Hospice.

Any other business:

DB enquired about ownership of the grassed area outside numbers 1 to 6 Thurgarton Road.  It is believed this land may be in the ownership of North Norfolk District Council but the Parish Council’s records will be checked to see if there is any information.

RE reported that she had received an enquiry from the Probation Service about the opportunities for community work being undertaken in the Parish.  The Parish Council welcomed the proposal and suggested a number of possible projects that could be undertaken.

FRIENDS OF ALDBOROUGH SCHOOL

Runners invited to join in first ‘Barningham 5k-ish Run’

Serious and fun-runners alike are invited to enjoy a rare opportunity to run, jog or simply walk the dog through the landscaped grounds of Barningham Hall on Saturday 1st October, between 1pm and 5pm at the first Barningham 5k-ish Run.

Set in Humphry Repton designed parkland surrounding Barningham Hall, the multi-terrain route takes in woodland, grazing land, and a circuit of the lake, and finishes up the West Avenue towards the front of the Hall, which dates from 1612.

A 1 mile (1.6k) Junior Run will also take place immediately before the main run starts, with winners’ medals and goody bags for all finishers.  Both races are raising funds for outdoor sports and play equipment for Aldborough Primary School.

As well as fete games and a guided warm-up before the start, teas and coffees, yummy hot food and home-made cakes will be available throughout the afternoon in the historic stable courtyard.

The 1 mile Junior Run commences at 2pm, with a 2.30pm start for the 5k-ish Run, staggered by ability.  Walkers and dogs are welcome, but dogs must be kept on a lead due to grazing sheep.  Registration for runners will cease 15 minutes before each race starts and race numbers will be allocated at this time.

Race entry is £5 for over 15s and £3 for under 15s. Entry forms are available from Intersport at Bakers & Larners in Holt; the Spar shop on Aldborough Green and GF White Butchers, 16 Red Lion Street, Aylsham – or runners can enter on the day.

Further information is available from Kirsty White, tel: 01263 735575.

As well as fete games and a guided warm-up

before the start, teas and coffees, yummy hot food and home-made cakes will be available throughout the afternoon in the historic stable courtyard.
